Loved Him to Death: Haru of Sachoné House by K.M. Frontain

Haru, merchant prince of Sachoné House, sails into the port of Verdant on a day when Ardu magic normally rejects outsiders of the faith. Despite that he is an infidel, Haru is chosen to be the next Oradhé, the holy man who must act as a dragon god's conscience. To Haru's dismay, the price exacted for this duty will be his eyes burned from his sockets.

Haru's struggle to retain his sight becomes a profound battle to preserve his spirit, for he must resist not only Verdant tradition, but the questionable advances of Intana, the dragon god. All the while, Vaal, the shark deity of Haru's people, lurks in the water and observes. Vaal of the Depths has plans for Verdant, for Intana, and for Haru.

Submissions Call

Wild Child Publishing and its subsidiary, Freya's Bower, are open to submissions. Interested in well-written, entertaining stories, Wild Child Publishing and Freya's Bower publish a wide variety of genres. While Wild Child Publishing focuses on mainstream fiction and non-fiction, Freya's Bower publishes romance and erotica.

Wild Child Publishing would love to see more mainstream romance, mystery, westerns, historical fiction, science fiction/fantasy, and suspense. Wild Child Publishing has also started a line of Biker Fiction, not seen anywhere else. What is Biker Fiction? Biker Fiction has a hero/heroine who is involved in the biker lifestyle. Wild Child Publishing currently has one Biker Fiction novel, Iron Horse Rider by Adelle Laudan, which will be available in print soon. To submit, please read the submission guidelines very carefully.

Freya's Bower is looking for a wide variety of genres from chapter book lengths to full-length novels. With a variety of lines available -- from T.R.O.U.B.L.E. to the Goddess Freya to the Valkyries -- and genres, it's easy to find a niche for your book. After Seven Years

Dear Readers,

For nearly eight years, Wild Child Publishing has published a magazine. As some of you know, in January, I put the magazine on hiatus to make a decision on what I was going to do with it. Would I go subuscription only or continue in the same vein as I'd had it for the past seven and a half years. Unfortunately, I have come to the conclusion that I do not have the time for the magazine portion of Wild Child Publishing and will be closing for now. Perhaps some time in the future, we will re-open.

We will keep the following portions of the magazine available:

  • Interviews
  • Book Reviews (we will no longer write them, but you are welcome to submit a review.)
  • eBook Reviews
  • Movie Reviews

In conjunction, I have redesigned the site

I want to thank all of you for your support and submissions these past seven years. I would encourage you to continue to support us by buying our ebooks and print editions and submitting to our publishing venture.

May your writing and reading adventures be many and always exciting,

Submissions Call and Guidelines change

Chapter Book Submissions Call

Freya's Bower is starting a new line of chapter books. These are a series of three, or more, installments of an ongoing story. Each "chapter" must be 5000-6000 words in length. They will be released monthly. The story can be any heat rating, any genre, and can even incorporate any of our series (Goddess Freya, Valkyrie, T.R.O.U.B.L.E., Angels and Demons) Due to the length, they will not be given ISBN's and will have one cover for all installments with the exception of a minor change to distinguish each installment from the others. (i.e. Title one: The Southern Sting: Chapter One, title two: The Southern Sting: Chapter Two, and so on.)

To submit, include the first chapter in the body of the email text with "CHAPTER BOOKS" in the subject line. Also include a one-paragraph synopsis of the following installments planned for the story. Send your submissions to: submitATfreyasbowerDOTcom .

If you have questions email Faith at editorfaithATsbcglobalDOTnet or Marci at mbaunATfreyasbowerDOTcom.

Please read our guidelines for formatting and any questions you might have before submitting.

WCP will now consider novellas (30,000-50,000 words) for publication. In the past, we have only considered such short works on the rare occasion. However, I have decided to expand our catalog to include shorter works. Wild Child Publishing will continue to accept works of 50,000 words or greater as well. All mainstream genres are welcome as is non-fiction. Be sure to read our guidelines carefully. These are designed to make the submission process as quick and easy as possible and to ensure that submissions are handled expeditiously.

Unless stated otherwise, our ebook section is open to submissions all year round.

D&D author Gemma Halliday's novels to be on TV!

I heard the BEST news today about Gemma Halliday, one of the super generous and talented authors who donated short stories for the DREAMS & DESIRES charity anthology. Her short story, Confessions of a Bombshell Bandit had charity anthology readers laughing out loud and clamoring for more, and her novels are even better!

Gemma Halliday's double RITA nominated novel, Spying in High Heels, is in development for a television series on the USA Network!!! It’s currently one of five new shows being developed for their fall 2007/2008 season. Spying in High Heels follows shoe designer Maddie Springer, who in an effort to track down her missing boyfriend, realizes that her knack for fashion also serves another purpose: it makes her a great detective. Maddie's uniquely female perspective helps her pick up clues, using her designer's eye to discern tell tale shapes, colors and patterns, among other things. Along with her best friend Dana, an out-of-work actress, Maddie decides to open a detective agency operating out of her stepfather's hair salon.

Not all shows in development make it to the air, but this one should! If you want to see Maddie and Ramirez on the small screen, write to the USA Network and tell them you heard about SPYING IN HIGH HEELS and can’t wait to watch it. Or, if you’ve read the book and liked it, tell them that, too! Contact the programming department at the USA Network:feedback@usanetwork.com

In the meantime, read up on Gemma's books, including Undercover in High Heels & Killer in High Heels.

New Wild Child release

Dark Roads & The Boy in the Grey Tracksuit by J.G. Craig

Dark Raods

The passengers of a broken down bus in the lonely Highlands of Scotland are about to face the darkness...

Why is there a deserted village that looks for all the world like it was made of and moulded from plastic? Why do the passengers start to disappear one by one? And what are the strange manifestations that baffle the confused, remaining passengers?

Lost in an unearthly fog that never dissipates, fate will eventually find these people and take them to new lives or to the other side of death. But for some, fate also holds a cruel and unexpected hand.

Dark Roads. What road are you on?

The Boy in the Grey Tracksuit

Frank has a difficult life. High on meds most of the time, he goes through his day like a zombie, eating very little, smoking too much and bitching online to anyone who'll listen. Then something triggers a memory in Frank, a news report about a young local boy who's gone missing. As he staggers blindly along, trying to piece the mystery together, he is forced to confront a truth so soul destroying that it will take all of his mettle to accept it.

1st Review for SECOND SIGHT

I'm having a great week.

Second Sight released yesterday (find it here).

Today the first review came in. White Russian gave Second Sight a rating of 5 Champagne Flutes and said:

A riveting read where the first sentence packs a punch and delivers the hook that had me gripped until the end. Some superb delivery lurks within the pages of Second Sight, along with excellent imagery ... My eyes tumbled over the sentences in a bid to read as quickly as I could ... Buy it and love it, readers. A solid and delightful read.

And then, to top it all off, my son was written up in the Willamette Week as one of the top 10 new bands of 2007 in Portland, OR! Wow! Check out the article here (there's even an audio file).

Yep. That's my boy! Dragging An Ox Through Water ...

Definitely a great week!

New WCP release

Fade to Pale by James Cheetham

Some children are forced to grow up quickly, while others aren’t meant to grow up at all. Little Rita existed between these two spectrums, wandering between reality and dreams, suffering and surviving in the Here and There.

Some people go over the edge with courage or blind faith, while others wade along the shoreline contemplating what might lay beyond the falls. Rita found the edge and clenched the rocks. There, she lingered as a child in the cold water while hanging on for dear life. There, with broken fingernails and white, waterlogged skin, she remained until she became an adult. All that she needed by then was a nudge…

Her past haunting her every waking moment, her present confusing her troubled mind, she wonders about the future. Fate awaits, but what if destiny is deceived? The universe changes and lives spin out of control. Rita lives one such life and carries her sins close to her heart. A weed amongst the flowers…

"bold and penetrating...deliciously disturbing...psychologically acute and entertaining, dark and inspiring..."

She has been granted permission to take on a new earth identity and live as a human, complete with a past, a job, and weird parents. There is one clause: that at the end of her last Earth mission, she must return to Oricitis. For good.

While searching for a new literary agent, she’s been writing e-books and polishing two full-length paranormal novels mixed with her zany sense of humor. Zinnia lives with her mountain man husband, and together, they raise large gardens and a houseful of children, not necessarily in that order. Z likes reading fan mail and would love to hear from readers who have enjoyed her stories: zinnia_hope@sbcglobal.net. For more abut Zinnia, her releases and much more she offers a monthly newsletter here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/zhnewsletter/.

However, it wasn’t until her children were grown and out on their own before she turned a natural talent into a career. Hampered by dyslexia, she persevered through disability to realize the innate ability she had been born to achieve. Though beginning a new life at fifty was occasionally daunting, the reward arrived with her first novel in the Forever Series, Dreams of Forever released by Lavender Isis Press in March of 2007.

ELISSA KYLE

Elissa Kyle grew up with a book in one hand and a pen in the other. Throughout her school years, she was an avid reader, loving classics like Little Women and Lord Of The Rings, reading them over and over. She became aware of her writing ability when she was able to crank out a four page story two hours before the paper was due in class. She hasn’t stopped creating stories since. She’s self published several books as well as having several short stories published. She currently splits her time between writing full time and working for several children's charities.

BDSM anthologies

Freya's Bower is open for submission for BDSM anthologies. There are two volumes from two perspectives: A Rose of Any Colour: Femdom and A Rose of Any Colour: Maledom. For more information regarding these anthologies, please contact Miranda Heart, author of Something Unexpected and Insubordinate, through the AWA site.

Each volume will incorporate the work of five authors. We are looking for three established BDSM authors for each volume. Remaining story slots for each book are open to newer writers to submit. Stories must be no less than 10K words and no more than 20K. Any sub-genre of BDSM is welcome with ratings of sweet, tangy, spicy, sizzling and beyond sizzling.

Both volumes are based on a rose theme. Whether the rose (or some form of a rose such as its thorns or petals) is integral to the plot or merely makes an appearance in the story, it is a requirement for all submissions.

Submit entire ms attached as an MS Word document to INSERT EMAIL with the words “BDSM Rose” in the subject line. Established authors must include a short bio.

Deadline is March 31st.

I have recently made contact with Good Vibes and another sex site to see if they will carry D&D. If they do, and we have enough word count for the anthologies, the anthologies could go to print and possibly be sold through their site and a few others.

Bad Things
by J.G. Craig

Something horrible is about to befall Carl and Donnie Philips, and neither of them can hope to understand it.

After Donnie goes through a traumatic operation in an attempt to restore his sight, they return home to find something is seriously wrong with their world. For one thing, there is a hideous monstrosity awaiting Donnie in his bedroom cupboard. For another, there is a red-eyed demon-woman stalking their every move as they flee their invaded home.

Saved on the lonely roads of Aberdeenshire by a mysterious young woman who seems to know her stuff when it comes to the supernatural, they head off into the countryside to spend the night with Donnie’s grandmother. But the evil follows, assaulting them with an increasingly bizarre array of terrible manifestations.

And to add more terror to their plight, the long, cold night never seems to end.

Anniversary Submissions Call

To celebrate our one-year anniversary on March 5, 2007, we're having a call for submissions and offering a nice advance against royalties for the top two manuscripts that fit the following categories.

For general submissions, we're looking for sweet and/or tangy erotic romance manuscripts of category length (30,001-45,000 words) and longer of any genre. See our guidelines for regular submissions and how we rate sweet and tangy: http://www.freyasbower.com/content/view/12/31/.

For our T.R.O.U.B.L.E. line, we're looking for sweet to beyond sizzling ratings for category length and longer only.

Out of the accepted manuscripts, two will be chosen to receive a publishing contract, a print version of the manuscript six months from eBook release date, and a nice advance against first royalties, which will be discussed upon signing the contract. One winning manuscript will be chosen from the sweet and/or tangy submissions and one will be chosen for our T.R.O.U.B.L.E. line. Second place manuscripts for each of these two categories will receive a smaller advance, but the print option will depend solely on eBook sales.

Other outstanding manuscripts will receive a publishing contract with Freya's Bower.

T.R.O.U.B.L.E. Guidelines:

(For male or female protagonists)

She's gorgeous and causes chaos wherever she goes. Perhaps she's a klutz, a walking disaster. Maybe she has the worst luck imaginable.

For males: He's dangerous. The bad boy you can't help but love. Maybe he's a chick magnet, or maybe he's the guy flipping burgers at the local diner. Catastrophe and mayhem seem to follow him around.

Use your imagination for the trouble theme. Any ethnicity, any genre welcome.

Protagonists can also be characters such as Valkyries (for our Valkyrie series), werewolves, vampires, wallflowers, etc.

Category length and longer. (30,001-45,000 words.)

Ratings can be from sweet to beyond sizzling for the TROUBLE line, but we are very open to sweet submissions right now.

First person submissions must be well written.

Please read our guidelines http://www.freyasbower.com/content/view/12/31/ for formatting and any questions you might have before submitting.

ATTN: We have also opened an Angels and Demons category. If the angel or demon fits the TROUBLE theme or the sweet and/or tangy rating, these novels are eligible for the top novel decisions.

Final words: Submissions may be semi-rough drafts, but please don't send something to us that you obviously have not checked over at least once. The key is semi-rough. Send the entire manuscript attached as an MS Word file to submitATfreyasbowerDOTcom with the word TROUBLE or SWEET/TANGY in the subject line.

Deadline for this call is February 20, 2007. If you have questions email Faith at editorfaithATsbcglobalDOTnet or Marci at mbaunATfreyasbowerDOTcom.

Please read our guidelines for formatting and any questions you might have before submitting.

Send submissions to submitATfreyasbowerDOTcom with the word TROUBLE in the subject line.

Updated shopping cart, charity anthology and a chat

Wow! So much is going on with Freya's Bower right now. This past weekend, I worked to upgrade the FB shopping cart. This is not the main portion of the site, but the section where you go to buy your ebooks and books. It's much easier to navigate now and more pleasing on the eye.

February 1st is right around the corner. The day the anthology is released. You can purchase the books presale through the shopping cart both in ebook and print format. If you buy a print version, I will include a free bookmark (see the photo along the side) with the purchase.

On February 1st, Gemma Halliday is hosting a bash for the release of the anthology on her website. The authors of the anthology will be there to chat with you. Not only that, there will contests and prizes (books and ebooks). The authors attending are: Gemma Halliday, Lois Winston, Rachelle Chase, Rhonda Stapleton, Amanda Brice, Sela Carsen, Sasha White, Richelle Mead, Jackie Kessler, Kit Wylde, Candace Havens, Faith Bicknell-Brown, Emily Veinglory, Jenna Bayley-Burke, Debbie Mumford, Bebe Thomas, and Susan Lyons.

Date: February 1st
Time: 5-7 pm PST (8-10 pm EST)
Location: Gemma Halliday's chat room, which will be available on the 1st

If you haven't visited our site recently, do so. We have two new titles available: Stripped by Rhonda Stapleton and Something Unexpected by Miranda Heart. I have also added a new menu feature, eBooks by Authors. You can read their bios, find out a little bit about our authors, and how many books they have.

Happy reading!

'A Personal Statement'

Hi all,

I finally got here despite the attempts of Blogger to split my personality and generally confuse me!

I wanted to share with you the cover of 'A Personal Statement' which I've just seen. I think it's wonderful, very cool and sophisticated, which I hope mirrors the book.

Friday, January 05, 2007

Introduction

Hi, all. I hope I'm doing this right. :D

My name is Rhonda Stapleton, and my chick lit novel, Stripped, will be coming out with Freya's Bower this year! YAY!

Here's a blurb about it:

Amanda Thomson, a web designer dissatisfied with her dull life, finds out that Jake Waters, the talentless stripper at the consolation party her friends threw for her when she lost out on a management promotion, got the job she wanted – no, deserved.

And not only is she fighting to prove herself at work, Amanda also has to deal with her meddling Grammy, her mom dating for the first time since her dad’s death, and her sister’s nagging suspicions of a cheating spouse.

Jake just relocated from Chicago and only stripped to his skivvies at Amanda’s party as a favor for a friend. He’s a workaholic single dad, trying to balance work demands while caring for his eight-year-old daughter…and chafing beneath his pushy mother’s influence.

The power struggles and sexual tension increase when Amanda and Jake are forced to work together at a tech conference, and then on an important client’s project. Amanda struggles to believe in her own self-worth. Jake struggles to learn how to balance work and home responsibilities.

And both struggle to get what they want and need from a relationship with each other.

As soon as the cover is ironed out and approved, I'll post it here.

I look forward to participating on this board and getting to know you guys better.

Thanks!

Rhonda

Freya’s Bower.com Celebrates Its One-Year Anniversary

To celebrate our one-year anniversary on March 5, 2007, we’re having a call for submissions and offering a nice advance against royalties for the top two manuscripts that fit the following categories.

Selling "used" ebooks

I am on a number of books discussing ebooks. Just last night, one of my lists alerted me to a couple of Word Press blogs that are selling “used” ebooks.

For those of you out there that don’t know, selling a copy of an ebook that you bought is illegal, as is buying a “used” ebook. It is copyright infringement. Buying an ebook does not give a person the right to sell it, give it away, or copy it. When a person does this, they not only break the law, but they hurt the author, the publisher, and readers. How it hurts the author and publisher is obvious, but what about the reader? Think about it, if the author is not making enough royalties from his/her books, she will not be able to write as many or may have to give up writing all together. And a number of publishers have closed their doors from people illegally sharing the ebooks they published. There are many talented authors out there who struggle, in part, because of this type of activity.

If you no longer want that ebook sitting on your PDA or computer, the best and only legal way to get rid of it is to delete it. If you wish to give someone an ebook, buy an extra copy and give it to them that way. Yes, it seems silly, but you will know you are supporting that author, allowing them to continue to write great tales that will amuse you for years to come.

Update on Dreams & Desires charity anthology

So, I sent the ARC for the charity anthology off to Romantic Times (RT) in hopes they would review it for the March issue. The contact for RT said that she didn't know if it would happen, but if I sent them a blurb for the book, perhaps that could go in. Of course, a review would be optimal, but I'll take a blurb if that's all they will give us. Still, I am pleased. I also sent out an ARC electronically to several online review sites. A number of them have been very supportive and have sent the book to a reviewer already. (I sent it out last night. That's a quick response.)

I am very appreciative at how supportive everyone is being. I know this is an important charity. I truly believe that when we band together, we can make a difference.
